Increase the adoption of your social intranet or community

Adoption requires ongoing attention, and you already have so many other things on your plate. But what exactly is adoption? How do you compare to others? Is that good enough?

Are you looking for a new social intranet or community platform? Or are you already working with an existing solution but still wondering, “How do we ensure sufficient adoption?” And what does ‘sufficient adoption’ really mean?

To answer this question, it’s crucial to make adoption measurable. But let’s be honest: the standard statistics provided by your platform only offer a surface-level view. From a maze of numbers and graphs, it’s rarely easy to extract the insights you truly need.

At Plek, we believe in a clear approach. We not only help you define adoption but also provide clarity on what’s working well and what can be improved. This way, you can maximize the value of your platform and your employees.

Measuring and Comparing Adoption

We define adoption as maximum reach, maximum visits, and maximum usage. This isn’t something that’s only important during implementation—it's not just a “launch campaign with balloons and done!” Adoption requires a continuous approach, comparing progress over time and benchmarking against similar organizations.

Adoption demands an ongoing process of collaboration, measurement, and improvement across departments and teams. It also requires awareness of where the organization currently stands and where you want to go. What are the objectives and ambitions for Internal Communication, both now and in the future?

Ambitions and Objectives

Once you understand your level of adoption, the next question quickly becomes: when is it good enough? That’s a question only you can answer. It depends on your ambitions and objectives.

When it comes to ambition, we use the following levels: Co-creation, Engagement, Information, and Initiation. The level of adoption you can expect depends on this level of ambition. Whether your objectives are realistic also hinges on this ambition level. For example, if you are operating at the Information level, an objective like “increasing knowledge sharing” is unlikely to succeed. Achieving that requires a higher ambition level: Co-creation.

Awareness of ambitions and objectives increases the chances of success and prevents disappointment. It provides a solid framework for continuous growth and improvement, based on realistic and measurable goals.

You can read more about this in the whitepaper below.

You measure adoption with the Plek Engagement Score, which can be compared month-to-month against your own adoption levels and those of similar organizations.

How do you compare to Others?

Benchmarking. Compare your adoption with similar organizations, for example, based on industry or size.

The Plek Engagement Score makes adoption measurable and trackable over time. You can compare your current performance to last year or even two years ago. And you can benchmark yourself against others for deeper insights.

Make Your Objectives Measurable

Many organizations set goals around internal communication. Often, these are objectives that are hard to measure, such as "Increasing awareness of vision and strategy," "Engaging and retaining employees," or "Encouraging knowledge sharing."

In practice, these objectives often prove to be barely measurable. Whether the goals are achieved remains unclear and is often based on opinions and assumptions.

With Plek's Internal Communication Evaluator, you can make your objectives measurable and trackable over time, regardless of which internal communication platform you use. Additionally, you can participate in the Internal Communication Benchmark and compare your objectives with those of other organizations.
